Poet, literary critic and Harvard University Professor Stephanie Burt and leading Chinese poets and Beijing Normal University Professors Ouyang Jianghe and Xi Chuan will discuss the work of Nobel laureate Louise Elizabeth Glück and their own poetic perspectives.
Ouyang Jianghe

Ouyang Jianghe is a renowned Chinese poet, critic of poetry and culture, a calligrapher, Director of the publication Today and a professor at Beijing Normal University. Among his works are ten books of poetry — including Who Leaves and Who Stays, Such a learned hunger and Da shi da fei — and his collection of reviews and essays Standing on This Side of Fabrication. His works have also been published in German, English and French. Ouyang Jianghe is seen as the most remarkable representative of the Chinese New Poetry Movement since the 1980’s. His writing style and ideology on poetry display contemporary art characteristics and have generated a huge and ongoing impact on society. He was awarded the Chinese Literature Media Award in Poetry and the Xu Zhimo Poetry Prize.
Xi Chuan
Beijing Normal University
Xi Chuan is a Chinese poet, essayist and translator, and currently a distinguished professor of Beijing Normal University. He has published nine collections of poems, two books of essays and three books of critical writings, in addition to a play and numerous translations of Ezra Pound, Jorge Luis Borges, Czeslaw Milosz, Gary Snyder among others. His awards include National Lu Xun Prize for Literature (2001), Author of the Year of the China Book Trade Annual Selection (2018), Swedish Cicada prize for poetry (2018), Japanese Tokyo Poetry Prize (2018). He was also one of the top ten winners of the 1999 Weimar International Essay Prize Contest, Germany. His work has been widely anthologized and translated and published in thirty countries. His book of poems in English translation Notes on the Mosquito: Xi Chuan /Selected Poems (tr. Lucas Klein) published by New Directions, New York, 2012, was awarded ALTA’s 2013 Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize.
Stephanie Burt

Stephanie Burt received a BA from Harvard University in 1994 and a PhD in English from Yale University in 2000. Burt, who has published under the name Stephen, is the author of the poetry collections Advice from the Lights (Graywolf Press, 2017), Belmont (Graywolf Press, 2013), and Parallel Play (Graywolf Press, 2006). Also a literary critic, Burt is the author of The Poem Is You (Harvard University Press, 2016); Close Calls with Nonsense (Graywolf Press, 2009), which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award; The Art of the Sonnet (Harvard University Press, 2010); and Popular Music (Center for Literary Publishing, 1999), among others. Burt is currently a professor of English at Harvard University.
