One version of who broke the nose of the Sphinx

The most likely cause of the missing nose is the effect of wind and moisture, which undermined the centuries-old sculpture. At the same time, the time of the loss of the part of the face is not precisely known. The ancient Egyptians for some reason did not leave any comments about it.

By the way, the nose is not the only loss. The sphinx once had a beard. Fragments of it can be seen in the British and Cairo museums. The timing of the beard is also in question. Most researchers conclude that the beard was prepared much later than the sculpture itself. Separate opinions claim that the face of the Sphinx was remade several times, and that the original image was altogether different.

The Long Beard

Hans Langset (14 July 1846 - 10 November 1927) was a Norwegian-born American citizen, world record holder for the length of his beard, who began growing his beard at the age of 19 as a contestant. Subsequently, he frequently toured the United States as part of so-called "freak shows," displaying his beard during performances. In his old age he decided to cut off most of his beard and kept it.

He spent the last years of his life in Barney, North Dakota, died at age 81 and was buried there; his body was then reburied in Iowa Cemetery. The cut portion of his beard was 5.33 meters long. In 1967 it was donated to the Department of Anthropology at the Smithsonian Institution.

Hyperinflation in the Weimar Republic 1919-1923

To pay for the high costs of the ongoing First World War, Germany suspended the convertibility of its currency into gold when war broke out. The strategy that Germany used to pay war reparations was the massive printing of banknotes to buy foreign currency, which was then used to pay reparations, but this strategy greatly exacerbated the inflation of the paper mark.

Although this policy was in practice reduced to a general strike in protest against the occupation, the striking workers still had to be financially supported. The government printed more and more banknotes, and soon Germany was flooded with paper money, further exacerbating hyperinflation. A loaf of bread in Berlin, which cost about 160 marks at the end of 1922, was worth 200,000,000,000 marks by the end of 1923. By November 1923, one U.S. dollar was worth 4,210,500,000,000 German marks.

History of the trampoline

Exercise, resembling jumping on a trampoline, appeared with the Nordic peoples - the Eskimos. As an elastic material for jumping was used stretched skin of walruses. In the posters of the XIX century with the image of the famous circus artist Pablo Fanka show that in his performances acrobat uses a device similar to a trampoline. At the beginning of the XX century, some acrobats in their performances also used "jumping beds" in order to surprise the audience.

Perhaps, the above examples are not the true predecessors of modern trampolines, but they prove that the idea of using some materials and structures for the safe implementation of high jumps in humans originated quite a long time ago.

Jug Valley

A group of historical and archaeological sites in Laos, Siangkhuang Province. At present thousands of large stone pots have been scattered in the foothills of the Annam Range, the mountain range separating Laos from Vietnam, which is about half to three meters long and weighs about 6,000 kilograms.

According to archaeologists, the jars were used 1500-2000 years ago by an ancient people who lived in Southeast Asia, whose culture remains completely unknown. The material has been dated between 500 BC and 800 AD. Anthropologists and historians have speculated that the jars were used either as burial urns or to store water.

Mother Teresa

Saint Teresa of Calcutta (born Agnes Gonje Boyadjiu, August 26, 1910 - September 5, 1997), known throughout the world as Mother Teresa, was a Catholic nun who founded the Congregation of Sisters of Charity - Missionaries of Love, dedicated to serving the poor and the sick. In 2003 she was beatified by the Catholic Church and canonized on September 4, 2016.

Teresa's work has been criticized due to the nun's questionable political affiliations, ineffective use of funds received from donations, and her refusal to use painkillers during treatment.
On March 13, 1997, Mother Teresa resigned as head of the Order of Mercy. She died on September 5, 1997. At the time of her death there were more than 4,000 missionaries of the Order of Mother Teresa, working in 610 offices in 123 countries.

History of the Great Famine in India 1876-1878

It began in 1876 after a severe drought resulted in a crop failure on the Deccan Plateau. It affected southern and southwestern India-the British-ruled presidencies of Madras and Bombay, and the princely states of Mysore and Hyderabad-for two years. In 1877 a famine struck the northern regions, including parts of the Central and Northwestern provinces as well as a small area in the Punjab.

The famine eventually affected an area of 670,000 square kilometers (257,000 square miles) and afflicted a total population of 58,500,000. Excess deaths during the famine have been estimated in a range with a low end of 5.6 million deaths, a high end of 9.6 million deaths and a thorough modern demographic estimate of 8.2 million deaths. The famine is also known as the South Indian Famine of 1876-1878 and the Madras Famine of 1877.
