Haines Shoe House.

This is a shoe-shaped house in the town of Hellam, Pennsylvania. The house, modeled after a work boot, was built by shoe salesman Mahlon Haines in 1948 as a form of advertising. His shoe business claimed that he made shoes "from hoof to hoof" because the company began the process by raising cattle. The house, which is 25 feet (7.6 m) high and contains five stories, was once rented out to couples and is now open for public tours.

The house is located on Shoe House Road, next to a shoe-shaped dog booth. Haynes asked for the design, handing a working shoe to the architect and saying: "Build me a house like this." The living room is located in the toe, the kitchen is located in the heel, the two bedrooms are located in the ankle, and the ice cream store is located in the rise. There is also a stained-glass panel on which Mahlon holds a pair of shoes with the inscription underneath: "Haines the Shoe Wizard." Fire escape ladders were added in the 1960s.

Sgt. Stubby

The most famous fighting dog (1916 or 1917 - March 16, 1926), who fought in World War I, won many awards and was the only dog in history to be promoted to the rank of sergeant for exploits on the battlefield.

Stubby was a cross between a Boston Terrier and a pit bull terrier and soon became the mascot of the 102nd Regiment of the 26th United States Infantry Division. The dog proved to be surprisingly trainable and in a short time learned to recognize the sound of the horn, learned to walk at a front step and even began to give the semblance of a military salute, raising his right front paw to his right eyebrow, when the soldiers of the division did the same.

His first combat wound occurred when he was gassed. In April 1918 Stubby was wounded by a hand grenade thrown by retreating Germans.By the end of the war Stubby took part in 17 battles.

Guillotine

The guillotine was a much more humane method of execution than the other forms of execution common at the time (burning at the stake, hanging, quartering). In addition, the guillotine was applied to all segments of the population without exception, which emphasized the equality of citizens before the law.

Dr. Guillotin was born in 1738. When he was elected to the Constituent Assembly, he submitted a proposal to the Assembly in December 1789 that the death penalty should always be carried out in the same way - namely by decapitation, and moreover by means of a machine. This method of execution became legal in 1791. Originally, beheading was supposed to be carried out by the sword, but this method proved to be inconvenient.

On April 25, 1792, after successful experiments on corpses, the first execution with the new machine was carried out. The guillotine was used intensively during the French Revolution and remained the main method of execution in France until its abolition in 1981.

A film that has been in the making for over 35 years

"Cinématon is a 201-hour film by French director Gérard Courant. It is considered one of the longest films ever made. Produced over 35 years (1978 to 2018), it consists of a series of 3,027 silent vignettes, each lasting 3 minutes and 25 seconds, showing various celebrities, artists, journalists and friends of the director, each doing what they want in the allotted time.

Terry Gilliam is shown eating a 100 franc bill. Samuel Fuller smokes a cigar. Gerard Courant considers a seven-month-old baby to be his favorite character in the film.

Glass Temple.

Wat Pa Maha Chedi Keo, the Temple of a Million Bottles, is a Buddhist temple complex in the village of Khouhan in the Thai province of Sisaket near the border with Cambodia. The entire temple complex is built from more than 1.5 million empty Heineken and Chang beer bottles. The empty bottles began to be collected in 1984, and in two years the main part of the temple was completed. The monks continue to expand the complex.

By 2017, there are 20 buildings in the complex built from old beer bottles. The temple is now listed as an eco-friendly attraction in Southeast Asia.

"Worst restoration in the history of painting."

"Fluffy Jesus" (Latin: Ecce Mono) is the result of a failed restoration. A parishioner, with the permission of the rector of the church, from 2010 to 2012 restored an early 20th-century fresco on the evangelical theme "Ecce Homo" ("Behold the man"). The result was considered by many experts to be "the worst restoration in the history of painting. The resulting image, which resembled a furry monkey, quickly became famous.

The work of the elderly parishioner was much more valuable and interesting than the original a century ago. "Furry Jesus" was called a shining example of primitivism. In the summer of 2012, the mural was fenced off and the church began to offer paid tours to it.

All attempts to return the mural to its original appearance were rejected when it was discovered that the wall with the mural had not originally been treated with special substances, which made it impossible to wipe off the top layer of paint without damaging the lower one.

Freakshow or "freak show"

A popular pastime that originated in 16th century England. People with physical defects, such as dwarfs and giants, hermaphrodites and people with other strange diseases, began to be seen as an object of entertainment and aroused the interest of hundreds of people.Freakshow participants toured Europe and the United States until 1940.

The "entertainers" received high salaries, signed contracts to perform - and generally lived almost like normal people, married and had children. Many healthy people deliberately mutilated themselves, for example, to get into the famous Barnum Circus.

Today the freak show as such does not exist. But in the nineteenth century, there would have been only one road for the disabled - to the freak show circus. But this road also had good sides - many freaks earned huge money and could provide for themselves much better than healthy people. So it's a complicated question - who is happier - today's disabled people or the circus freaks of those times.

A symbol of loyalty and devotion in Japan.

Hachiko is an Akita-inu dog born on November 10, 1923. He was given to a university professor. The professor gave the puppy the name Hachiko, derived from haichi (Jap. ハチ, "eight") and the suffix (Jap. 公 ko:) indicating affection or dependence, as the dog was the professor's eighth.

The dog followed his master everywhere. He drove into town every day to work, and the dog would first accompany him and then meet him. On May 21, 1925, the university professor had a stroke. Hachiko was 18 months old at the time. He came to the station for nine years until his death on March 8, 1935.

On April 21, 1934, a monument was erected to Hachiko. During World War II, the monument was destroyed. In August 1948, the monument was restored. Today, the statue of Hachiko near Shibuya Station is a meeting place for lovers.
