The Long Beard

Hans Langset (14 July 1846 - 10 November 1927) was a Norwegian-born American citizen, world record holder for the length of his beard, who began growing his beard at the age of 19 as a contestant. Subsequently, he frequently toured the United States as part of so-called "freak shows," displaying his beard during performances. In his old age he decided to cut off most of his beard and kept it.

He spent the last years of his life in Barney, North Dakota, died at age 81 and was buried there; his body was then reburied in Iowa Cemetery. The cut portion of his beard was 5.33 meters long. In 1967 it was donated to the Department of Anthropology at the Smithsonian Institution.
