2022-05-20 14:00:01 The fastest punch in the history of martial arts

Bruce Lee (November 27, 1940 - July 20, 1973) was a Hong Kong and American film actor, director, screenwriter, producer, promoter and reformer of Chinese martial arts, martial arts master, fight scene director, founder of the Jit Kung-Do style, and poet.

Most experts consider the short "inch" fist blow, which almost no one can repeat and which is shown on the recordings of Lee's demonstrations in the last years of his life, to be a great achievement.

Bruce Lee could hold a 32 kilogram weight on the weight of his outstretched hand for several seconds.
Bruce Lee's kicks were so fast that sometimes they could not be filmed with the then common technology of 24 frames per second, so some scenes had to be filmed with a 32-frame method.
Bruce Lee could hold his legs angled in an arm rest for 30 minutes or more.
Bruce Lee could toss grains of rice in the air and catch them with chopsticks.
Bruce Lee could pierce a sealed can of Coke with his fingers (in those days, cans were made of steel and were much thicker than modern aluminum cans).
Bruce Lee could do push-ups on two fingers of one hand and also do pull-ups using only his little finger to grip the bar.

2022-05-20 08:00:00 Yurdbruggrotta

Jordbrugrotta (Norwegian: Jordbrugrotta or Pluragrotta) is an underwater grotto cave discovered by British speleologists in 1966 and named after the Jordbrua farm, located just down the valley. The entrance to the cave is about two kilometers south of the dam of Lake Kallvatnet.

The Plourdalen valley is rich in limestone rocks, so that the Plura River formed a network of underwater grottoes by washing out lime. After the construction of a dam at Lake Kallvatnet in the 1960s, the river became very shallow and the number of underwater grottos decreased.

Yurdbruggrotta is one of the longest: its length is about 2600 meters and depth is up to 110 meters, making it an attractive grotto for divers. Diving, however, is associated with a risk to life: thus, August 16, 2006 in the grotto was killed 37-year-old man from Grimstad, and raising his body from a depth of 90 meters required the involvement of rescuers from Germany and Scotland. A similar tragedy occurred on February 7, 2014, when an accident at a depth of 110 meters killed two Finnish divers and injured three others. The bodies of the victims were not raised to the surface until late March.

2022-05-19 14:00:01 The Terracotta Army in Xi'an

"Terracotta Army" (兵馬俑 in Chinese, 兵马俑, pinyin bīngmǎ yǒng, pall binma yong) is the accepted name for the burial of at least 8100 full-size terracotta statues of Chinese soldiers and their horses at the mausoleum of the Qin Shihuang emperor in Xian. The terracotta statues were buried with the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty, Shi Huang-ti, in 210-209 B.C.

Construction required the efforts of more than 700,000 workers and craftsmen and lasted 38 years. The perimeter of the outer wall of the tomb is six kilometers. Although instead of living warriors - contrary to tradition - along with the emperor were buried their clay copies, were also buried, according to various estimates, up to 70 thousand workers, along with their families.

The statues were discovered in March 1974 by local peasants while drilling an artesian well east of Mount Lishan. The first phase of excavation took place from 1978 to 1984. The second was from 1985 to 1986. June 13, 2009 began the third phase of excavation.

2022-05-19 08:00:00 The death of the group of Dyatlov.

The event took place in the vicinity of Mount Holatchahl in the north of the Sverdlovsk Region in early 1959 (most probably on the night of February 2). The group of nine tourists led by Igor Dyatlov who were making a ski trip along the Northern Urals died in their entirety (the only surviving participant of the trip, Yuri Yudin, disembarked due to illness on January 28). According to the results of the official investigation, the accident was declared an accident of insuperable force. However, in the absence of exact information on the circumstances of the accident, journalists and enthusiastic researchers offered numerous alternative versions of the reasons for the accident, which have been attracting public attention ever since.

The dissatisfaction of the victims' relatives and the public led to a sixty-year old criminal case being checked by the Russian General Prosecutor's Office to find out the cause of the tourists' deaths.

In memory of the dead tourist group, the nearby pass was named "Dyatlov Pass," so modern sources often associate the accident with this very pass.

2022-05-18 20:00:01 Antikytherian Mechanism

A mechanical device recovered in 1901 from an ancient ship. The remains of a ship and its cargo were discovered by a Greek diver on April 4, 1900 near the Greek island of Andikytira. The mechanism dates from approximately the second half of the second century B.C. (some estimates go back to 205 B.C.). It is preserved in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

The mechanism contained at least 30 bronze gears in a rectangular wooden case, with dials with hands placed on the bronze front and back panels. Two rectangular bronze protective plates covered the front and rear panels. The approximate overall dimensions were 31.5×17×6 cm. The mechanism was used to calculate the motion of celestial bodies and allowed us to know the date of 42 astronomical events.

2022-05-18 14:00:01 What a nose !

Thomas Vedders, also known as Thomas Wodehouse, born in Yorkshire, England, around 1730, was a performer in various circus shows in the mid-18th century. Wadders is mainly known for having the world's longest nose, supposedly 7.5 inches (19 cm) long.

Apart from his unusual appearance, little is known about Vedders' life. Articles of the period noted that he seemed intellectually handicapped by an unknown condition, possibly related to his unusual facial deformity. He died about 1780 in Yorkshire, aged 50 or 52.

The Guinness Book of World Records awarded him the posthumous title of "The Biggest Nose in the World." A wax reproduction of his head is in the Ripley Museum.

2022-05-18 08:00:00 The Mystery of Flight 19

Flight 19 was the designation of a group of five General Motors TBM Avenger torpedo bombers that disappeared over the Bermuda Triangle on 5 December 1945 after losing contact during a U.S. Navy training flight from Fort Lauderdale Naval Air Station, Florida. All 14 pilots involved in the flight died, as did all 13 crew members of the Martin PBM Mariner flying boat, which subsequently launched from Banana River Naval Air Station to search for Flight 19.

The report of the Naval investigators concluded that the flight leader, Lt. Charles Taylor mistook the small offshore islands for the Florida Keys after his compasses stopped working, causing the plane to head out to sea, moving away from land. The Navy later changed the report to "cause unknown" to avoid blaming Taylor for the loss of five aircraft and 14 men. The report attributed the loss of the PBM aircraft to an airborne explosion while searching for the flight.

2022-05-17 20:00:07 The Arecibo message

This is an interstellar radio message carrying basic information about humanity and Earth that was sent to the globular star cluster M13 in 1974. It was intended as a demonstration of human technological advances rather than an actual attempt to engage in conversation with extraterrestrials. It was noted that the low resolution of the image made it impossible for any extraterrestrial recipients to give the intended meaning to most of its elements.

The message was transmitted into space once using frequency-modulated radio waves at a ceremony to mark the reconstruction of the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico on November 16, 1974. The message was directed to the current location of M13, about 25,000 light-years from Earth, because M13 was a large and relatively close collection of stars that were available in the sky during and at the ceremony site. When properly translated into graphics, the symbols and spaces of the 1,679 bits of data contained in the message form the image shown here.

2022-05-17 14:00:01 The time when the dog was domesticated

Fossil remains of prehistoric dogs have been found in human caves around the world.Previously, based on archaeological findings, scientists called the date of domestication of dogs 13-15 thousand years B.C.

Paleontologists of the Royal Museum of Natural History of Belgium indicate a date of 31.7-36.5 thousand years BC Fossil remains found in the Altai Mountains in Siberia, the age of domestic dogs from the Altai Razboinichya cave, found back in 1975, was estimated at 33.5-34 thousand years. In the Czech Republic (Prshestv) age of the remains is dated 24-27 thousand years BC, Ukraine - 15 thousand years BC, in America, Utah - 11 thousand years BC, China - 7-5.8 thousand years BC.

It is the hunting qualities of the dog, as anthropologists believe, that were the main factor in its domestication. Ancient humans, in their struggle for survival, were looking for the most perfect methods of obtaining food.
