The castle was built on top of a hill and is surrounded by a 6.5 km long wall on which there are 14 towers. The eastern section of the wall descends almost to the sea, right up to the Red Tower. The fortress housed about 400 inhabitants. On the very top of the hill, located in its western part, at an altitude of 250 meters above sea level, rise the ruins of the castle.

The castle was built in the 13th century by the Seljuk sultan Ala ad-din Kay Kubad on the site of earlier fortifications of the Byzantine and Roman periods. The castle had several gates - the main one with inscriptions and several auxiliary ones. Most of them are now destroyed.

Inside the castle are several ancient structures such as brick cisterns, baths and the Byzantine church of St. George 4-5 century AD. In the 19th century, many residential villas were built on the territory of the castle.

2022-05-23 14:11:01 The largest living creature on the planet

The vast majority of the mass of the dark boletus and other species of its genus lie underground and are invisible to humans. Only small groups resembling common mushrooms and serving for reproduction can be seen above the surface. At the moment, these largest organisms in the world pose a serious threat to forests, mainly coniferous forests, causing seemingly gratuitous death of trees.

The dark openok fungus, which develops in the Malur Forest Preserve in the U.S. state of Oregon is recognized as the largest living creature on the planet: it covers an area of more than 880 hectares, and its age is estimated at 2.4 thousand years. The giant fungus, entangling the roots of trees, causes the death of the latter, which attracted the attention of biologists who, in 1998, were able to determine that it is not individual clusters growing throughout the forest, but a giant holistic living organism. Having studied the genome of the dark oponcus, they found that it is able to decompose the lignin in the wood of higher plants particularly efficiently, which is what allows it to parasitize on them so successfully. Their rhizomorphs are dark threads that, having penetrated under the bark, run under it through the sapwood of the trunk for tens of meters and thus the fungi obtain nutrients from plants. Over time, trees infested by parasites die.

2022-05-22 20:00:01Chupa Chups

In the early 1950s, Enric Bernat worked at an apple jam factory called Granja Asturias. After he pitched the idea of making lollipops on a stick, the investors left. Bernat took over the company in 1958 and renamed it Chupa Chups. He built production machines and sold striped bonbons on a wooden stick for one peseta each.

Bernat got the idea for his lollipops from him, getting sticky hands from melting candy. Bernat believed that candy was not intended for children at that time. Store owners were instructed to place the chupa-chups near the cash register within reach of children's hands, instead of the usual placement behind the counter.

Chupa Chups has been a success. Within five years, Bernat's candy was on sale in 300,000 outlets. When the candy was first created, the lolly sticks were made of wood, but they switched to plastic sticks. After the end of Francoist Spain (1939-75), the self-financed private company became international. In the 1970s candy appeared in Japan and Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines and Malaysia, as well as India and Australia. In the 1980s it spread to the European and North American markets, and in the 1990s to most Asian countries, including South Korea. In China, they were produced by Tatagum in Panyu, near Guangzhou. As of 2003, 4 billion lollipops a year were sold in 150 countries. The company has 2,000 employees, makes 90 percent of its sales abroad, and has a turnover of €500,000,000.

Bernat transferred formal control of the company to his son Xavier in 1991. A subsidiary company, Smint, was founded in 1994.

2022-05-22 08:00:01 History of Alcohol

The history of alcoholic beverages occupies a special place in the history of mankind. The production and consumption of alcoholic beverages reflect the cultural and religious characteristics of the populations of different countries.

The discovery of Stone Age vessels with remains of fermented beverages suggests that the production and consumption of alcoholic beverages existed as early as the Neolithic period. In Europe during the Middle Ages, beer was an everyday drink for people of all estates and ages. A document of the time mentions nuns having a monetary allowance measured at six pints of beer for each day. Alcoholic beverages such as cider and apple wine were widely available during these years; grape wine remained the prerogative of the upper classes.

In the unsanitary conditions of medieval Europe, drinking alcoholic beverages helped avoid water-borne diseases such as cholera. Drinking wine and beer was safer than drinking water, which tended to come from polluted sources. The alcohol in the drinks helped disinfect them and keep them safe for months. For this reason they were stored on board sailing ships as an important (or even the only) source of liquid for the crew, especially during long voyages. Alcohol was also an effective painkiller and served as a source of energy for hard work.

Alcohol consumption at this time was much more widespread than in antiquity, including among the spiritual elite and among women. The Vagantes tried alcohol as a way to challenge the existing social system, while introducing into the culture many ideas and images associated with drinking alcoholic beverages.

2022-05-21 20:00:02 An idol of female entrepreneurship.

Margarete Steiff (July 24, 1847 - May 9, 1909) was a seamstress who founded Margarete Steiff GmbH in 1880, which produced toy stuffed animals. Born in Giengen, Germany, Steiff contracted polio as a child, resulting in paralysis in both legs and pain in her right arm. After training as a seamstress, she was able to raise enough money to buy a sewing machine.

She began making clothes, eventually opening her own store in 1877. It was around this time that Steiff came across a pattern for sewing a toy elephant, as well as patterns for mice and rabbits. Using felt and sheep's wool, Steiff made many of these toys as gifts for friends, and later began selling some. Having proved popular, the scale of production steadily increased, as did the variety of toys. In 1902, the company began producing a toy bear with movable joints designed by Steiff's nephew. It took off in the United States and was nicknamed after then-U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, becoming the first teddy bear.

By 1907, one million teddy bears had been produced.Margaret Steiff became an important figure in German women's entrepreneurship. Originally from a small town in southern Germany and living with a lifelong physical disability, she founded and developed a business that continues to receive worldwide recognition. Literature on German entrepreneurs mentions her as an idol of female entrepreneurship and innovation, developing her business outside of Germany.

2022-05-21 11:00:04 Soft toy

Children's toy made of artificial fur, fabric and stuffed material. At different times, straw, sawdust, shavings, cotton fibers, etc. were used for stuffing. Since the end of the twentieth century, high-tech materials were used: sintepon, synthetic granules, etc.

Ancient toys were found by archaeologists in Egypt. The earliest mentions date back to the third millennium BC. Prototypes of modern stuffed toys or images of them were found at the excavations of Pompeii in Italy. Various toys in the form of animals and birds have been found in Siberia, Ukraine and other places. A large number of ancient toys are found in China.

In the 19th century in France was formed "Syndicate of French toy manufacturers," which can be considered the beginning of the toy industry. At the beginning of the XX century began the mass production of teddy bears and the increasing demand for these products.
The first soft toy appeared in Germany in 1903.

A cave in Vietnam, the largest cave in the world. It is located in Central Vietnam, Quang Binh Province, Phong Nha Kebang National Park, 500 kilometers south of Hanoi and 40 km from the provincial center - Dong Hoi. The cave has been known by locals since 1991 and was discovered by a group of British speleologists in April 2009. The cave has an underground river that floods some parts of the cave during the rainy season.

Study of nearly 6,500 meters of the cave showed that in some places it reaches 200 meters in height and 150 meters in width. It is considered the cave with the widest and highest passages. The total volume of the cave is estimated at 38.5 million cubic meters.

Grass and trees grow in some areas of the cave where light penetrates through the gaps in the vault.
