“The US wants to use income from the assets to support a $50 billion loan for Ukraine. Germany's agreement could bring the US and its allies closer to providing new aid,” the publication writes.

The states are ready to provide a loan of about $50 billion, which will be repaid using interest generated by Russian assets, without confiscation of the principal amount of the debt. This is about 5 billion euros per year.

Washington expects from Europe, if not complicity in lending, then at least a commitment that assets will remain immobilized and the loan will be repaid.

But there is “long-term uncertainty” here: if the war ends and Russia agrees to pay for the reconstruction of Ukraine, then the question of unfreezing assets will arise. Or at some stage one of the EU countries will block the extension of the asset freeze.

Bloomberg reports that the German authorities are expecting a final decision no earlier than the summit of G7 leaders, which will be held on June 13-15, and the actual implementation of the agreements no earlier than next year.
