2021-10-03 16:33:09 Seth Donnelly - The Lie of Global Prosperity: How Neoliberals Distort Data to Mask Poverty and Exploitation

This book deconstructs the assumption that global poverty has fallen dramatically, and lays bare the spurious methods of poverty measurement and data on which the dominant prosperity narrative depends. Here is carefully researched documentation that global poverty and the inequalities and misery that flourish within it-remains massive, afflicting the majority of the world's population. Donnelly goes further to analyze just how global poverty, rather than being reduced, is actually reproduced by the imperatives of capital accumulation on a global scale. Just as the global, environmental catastrophe cannot be resolved within capitalism, rooted as it is in contemporary mechanisms of exploitation and plunder, neither can human poverty be effectively eliminated by neoliberal "advances.

2021-10-03 13:58:25 Bernard D’Mello - India after Naxalbari: Unfinished History

Although the 1967 revolutionary armed peasant uprising in Naxalbari, at the foot of the Indian Himalayas, was brutally crushed, the insurgency gained new life elsewhere in India. In fact, this revolt has turned out to be the world’s longest-running “people’s war,” and Naxalbari has come to stand for the road to revolution in India. What has gone into the making of this protracted Maoist resistance? Bernard D’Mello’s fascinating narrative answers this question by tracing the circumstances that gave rise to India’s “1968”decade of revolutionary humanism and those that led to the triumph of the “1989” era of appallingly unequal growth condoned by Hindutva-nationalism, the Indian variant of Nazism.

Will what remain of India’s continuing “1968” bring twenty-first-century “New Democracy” to the collective agenda? Or will the ongoing regression of “1989” lead the way to full-blown semi-fascism and sub-imperialism? India after Naxalbari is far more than a simple history of the ongoing Naxalite/Maoist resistance; it is a deeply passionate and informed work that not only captures the essence of modern Indian history but also tries to comprehend the present in the context of that history so that the oppressed can exercise their power to influence its shape and outcome.

2021-10-03 11:30:14 Robert W. McChesney - Digital Disconnect: How Capitalism Is Turning the Internet Against Democracy

Hailed as “important” (Truthdig) and praised for its “excellent insight” (Patricia J. Williams), Digital Disconnect, by Robert W. McChesney, skewers the assumption that a society drenched in information in a digital age is inherently a democratic one. A prescient examination of the relationship between the Internet and the economy one that has become even more relevant since its publication in hardcover the book argues that capitalism's colonization of the Internet has spurred the collapse of credible journalism and made the Internet an unparalleled apparatus for government and corporate surveillance. “A provocative and far-reaching account of how capitalism has shaped the Internet in the United States” (Kirkus Reviews) and “an excellent analysis of the problem where a medium with the capacity to empower people is itself becoming a tool of social control” (Daily Kos), Digital Disconnect is both a groundbreaking critique of the Internet and an urgent call to reclaim the democratizing potential of the digital revolution while we still can.

2021-10-01 18:16:33 George Monbiot on capitalism, the climate crisis, defying establishment journalism - and hope

George Monbiot is one of the most important progressive writers of our time. We talk about what it's like being a progressive journalist in the establishment media, about whether the climate emergency can possibly be solved under capitalism, about how public understanding of the crisis has changed, how our lakes are being destroyed and our ecosystems butchered, the legacy of colonialism, long COVID, the pandemic and much else.

2021-10-01 15:40:10 Michael C. Behrent - The True Foucault

The issues most important to Michel Foucault have moved from the margins to become major preoccupations of political life. But what did Foucault actually teach?

As Foucault’s standing has climbed on the right, it has fallen on the left. A decade ago, left attention focused on whether Foucault’s discussions of neoliberalism in the 1970s suggested that his philosophical commitments harmonized with the emergent free-market ideology: hostile to the state, opposed to disciplinary power, and tolerant of behaviors previously deemed immoral. Recently, the locus of the leftist critique has, like its conservative counterpart, shifted to cultural politics. Thus the social theorists Mitchell Dean and Daniel Zamora maintain that Foucault’s politicization of selfhood inspired the confessional antics of “woke culture,” which seeks to overcome societal ills by making the reform of one’s self the ultimate managerial project. At the same time, Foucault’s standing has suffered a debilitating blow in the wake of recent claims that he paid underage boys for sex while living in Tunisia during the 1960s. These charges have brought new attention to places in his writing where like some other radicals of his era he questioned the need for a legal age of consent.

Center for Soft and Living Matter (Корея)
