The first rector was D. P. Bogolepov, a graduate of Moscow State University and Deputy People's Commissar of Finance of the RSFSR. The first intake was 280 people. The MFEI was the first institution of higher education in Russia aimed at training experienced, educated employees of the financial institutions of the workers' and peasants' state. In the early 1920s it was closed, then reestablished as a faculty, and in 1930 as an independent institute. In 1931, the Moscow Accounting and Economic Institute, reorganised and renamed the Moscow Credit and Economic Institute (MCEI) in 1934, began work.
