In 2016, the Financial University received "three stars" QS Stars in the ranking of the company QS Quacquarelli Symonds, which evaluates various aspects of educational institutions and has become one of the main tools in making decisions by applicants around the world about studying at a particular university.

In the ranking of Russian universities, prepared by the Typical Applicant portal, the Financial University ranks: 7th place in the overall ranking, 5th place in the ranking of "Socio-economic universities".

In the ranking of the faculties of the largest universities of the Russian Federation most in demand among employers, the Faculty of Finance and Economics took the 5th line.

The MFEI was the first institution of higher education in Russia aimed at training experienced, educated employees of the financial institutions of the workers' and peasants' state. In the early 1920s it was closed, then reestablished as a faculty, and in 1930 as an independent institute. In 1931, the Moscow Accounting and Economic Institute, reorganised and renamed the Moscow Credit and Economic Institute (MCEI) in 1934, began work.
