Are “maybe,” “perhaps,” “probably,” “possibly” and “potentially” synonymous/interchangeable, or are there certain instances where one or two should be used over the others?
They are not all interchangeable. In particular,
probably stands out from the rest.
Maybe,
perhaps,
possibly, and
potentially all mean that something
could happen, but it’s not guaranteed. The probability lies somewhere between 0 and 1, with no indication which end it’s closer to.
Probably, on the other hand, indicates that something is
likely to happen, and that you would be more surprised if it
didn’t happen than if it
did.
