Idioms

Idioms are phrases, sayings, or groups of words that have a metaphorical (non-literal) meaning.

They're great to use in the classroom because they can help boost your students' conversational English skills.

Here are a few examples of common and easy idioms that you can teach to your students!

2022-06-04 00:52:45 Good Teachers Are Strong Communicators

When it comes to effective teaching, strong communication skills are a must, said Dr. Daniel Tanguay, senior associate dean of faculty and education programs.

Tanguay got his start as a high school math teacher and said that many students came to his class feeling afraid of math, discouraged by their prior experiences and too overwhelmed to approach the subject positively.

By communicating with students at the beginning of the year about how math applies to their favorite hobbies, sports and future careers, Tanguay said his students were able to approach the subject in a more enjoyable way that better supported their learning.

“I’m a firm believer in communication in all forms,” he said. “As a leader, communication is a tool for overcoming fear.”

Good Teachers Listen Well

Great communication doesn't stop when the teacher is done talking. Listening well is one of the most important skills needed to be a teacher.

“Teachers that are skilled in listening and observing often pick up on what isn’t being said, such as any anxieties a student may have, and can then help the student build their skills and confidence levels," said student Kristine Ducote, who is earning her bachelor's in criminal justice.

Student Latricia Maddox, who is studying for a bachelor's in business, said that effective listening skills also help a teacher better understand their students and tailor lessons to reach them how they learn best.

“If an educator can truly hear a student, they can learn how to reach them where they are,” she said. “This will open the door for them to receive and learn the lesson that is being taught.”

2022-06-04 00:51:29 In a sense, teachers are students throughout their lives. The moment they stop considering themselves students, they cease to be teachers. They need to keep on acquiring and updating knowledge of what they teach in classrooms, periodically, keeping up with the changing world.

Personal: Self-Centered Development

Teachers can attain this development in two manners – Formal and Informal. Formal methods include: attending conferences, workshops, webinars, seminars, symposiums with a view to enlightening teachers on latest developments in the field of education, which help them update with latest concepts that are required for professional
development.

Writing articles/books, material production, publication of research papers, etc also help a lot in this form of development. Action research that draws out conclusions at the end of experimentation and investigation can also be helpful in the development.

Professional: Student-Centered Development

Teachers, in order to let learners learn in the best possible ways, have to adapt to the changes from time to time. Learners live in a different setup as compared to teachers. This gap can be bridged by teachers only when they reach out to the mental level of the learners. Over a period of time there have been tremendous changes in the setup of our education system. Teachers have to have demonstrate that they posses some special characteristics to handle the changing times and trends in education sphere.

According to National Curriculum Framework (2005), teachers have basic responsibility to develop basic capabilities of students. They (teachers) have the responsibility of developing language formation for students helping the young minds in sustaining relationship with their friends as well as teaching staff. It has to be found out that student achievement is directly proportional to the quality of teaching provided by the teacher in the classroom.

It is a must for teachers to have undergone some development in certain period of time ever since they joined the profession in order to make better teaching-learning sessions for the generations to come.

What is the Universal Language of the Skies?

In 2001, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) determined that English would, from then on, be the standardized language of air travel, and issued a directive that stated that all aviation personnel—pilots, flight crews, and air traffic controllers—must pass an English proficiency test.

The mandatory compliance date was March 5, 2008. Not only must applicants know the appropriate aviation terminology in English, they must also be able to understand English instructions via radio, with no facial cues to prompt them.

They also must learn to develop as benign an accent as possible, so that they are “intelligible to the aeronautical community.”

"In this webinar, I'll report back on a pilot course ran between April-May 2021 which focussed on teaching productive aspects of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) via virtual reality (VR). The course used a special app called Immerse to plan and deliver the lessons. Aspects of productive EAP such as seminar and presentation skills were introduced during the course and students were asked for feedback after lessons each week to identify how useful they found them. The webinar will also explore the specific classroom management and pedagogy of teaching within virtual reality."
