Public opinion says that selfishness is exceptionally evil.
Like other societal attitudes, this one is designed to make you comfortable for society and the state. After all, there is nothing better for the state machine than a person who is self-involved, but is constantly thinking about the ALL-OVERAL GOOD.
Of course, the common good is good, but you are the only one at your mother's That's why, a healthy portion of selfishness has never stopped anyone, and even the opposite.

It sounds very logical, and everyone deeply understands that this is the best way, but they are often afraid to admit it.
