ПРО ДЛИНУ ПРЕДЛОЖЕНИЙ

Рекомендуемая редакторами Academic Writing длина предложений немного варьирует, но в целом держится в районе 15-17 слов на предложение — и это правило известно хорошо.

Есть нюанс. Дело в том, что тут речь идет о средней длине предложений, и если вы все предложения будете писать по 15 слов, то ваш читатель уснет.

Поэтому есть и второе, менее известное правило — длина предложений должна варьироваться. Она не должна превышать 25 слов, следовательно, чтобы мы держались средней длины в 15 предложений, у нас должны быть предложения и по 5 слов.

Далеко ходить не буду, возьму пример из недавно переведенного нами учебника по лечению аневризм аорты:

The target vessel originates from the aneurysm and there is a gap between the main stent graft and the aortic wall.
Branched stent grafts are currently performed using one of the two approaches.
Fenestrated branches are based on reinforced fenestrations bridged by balloonexpandable covered stents.
Directional or cuffed branches are based on pre-sewn cuffs, which can be straight, helical, downgoing, upgoing, internal, or external.
These branches are bridged by self-expandable stent grafts>.

Как видите, все 6 предложений по длине разные, однако в них 91 слово, и средняя длина — как раз 15 слов на предложение.

Аналогичная ситуация и в ИТ-текстах, пример из одной моей настольной книги:

When the transaction wants to commit, the database checks whether any of the ignored writes have now been committed.
If so, the transaction must be aborted.
Why wait until committing?
Why not abort transaction immediately when the stale read is detected?
Well, if transaction was a read-only transaction, it wouldn’t need to be aborted, because there is no risk of write skew.
At the time when transaction makes its read, the database doesn’t yet know whether that transaction is going to later perform a write.
Moreover, transaction may yet abort or may still be uncommitted at the time when transaction is committed, and so the read may turn out not to have been stale after all.
By avoiding unnecessary aborts, SSI preserves snapshot isolation’s support for long-running reads from a consistent snapshot.>

9 предложений, 155 слов, по 17 слов на предложение. Немного не попадает в рекомендацию, но текст все равно читается динамично.


Позже расскажу еще про одно правило, связанное с длиной и динамикой предложений — тоже очень интересное.
