4GB files support for bots

It was announced on the official Bot API channel that it will no longer be possible to store the value of file_size fields in a signed 32-bit integer type.

This change is necessary to support 4GB files which Telegram Premium users will be able to upload.

The Telegram Info editors remind you that non-updated bots and clients cannot work with files of the new size.

Pavel Durov accused Apple for its restrictions on web applications

In April, the developer of Telegram WebK shared a list of Safari issues that Apple hasn't fixed on iOS in years.

“We suspect that Apple may be intentionally crippling its web apps to force its users to download more native apps where Apple is able to charge its 30% commission,” Pavel Durov wrote.

This week, the Competition and Markets Authority (the UK regulator) expressed a concern that Apple is banning alternatives to its own browser on its mobile devices.

“It's sad that, more than ten years after Steve Job's death, a company that once revolutionized mobile web turned into its most significant roadblock,” added Pavel Durov.

Pavel Durov officially announced the introduction of a paid Telegram Premium subscription this month in his Telegram channel.

«After giving it some thought, we realized that the only way to let our most demanding fans get more while keeping our existing features free is to make those raised limits a paid option. That's why this month we will introduce Telegram Premium, a subscription plan that allows anyone to acquire additional features, speed and resources. It will also allow users to support Telegram and join the club that receives new features first».

Pavel said that all Telegram's existing functions will remain free for everyone. Moreover, the app will continue to be updated with new publicly available features. And those users who will not buy a Premium subscription will be able to take advantage of some of its advantages: for example, viewing premium stickers with full-screen animations, downloading larger files, or adding a Premium response to a message (provided that all this is sent by a paid subscriber).

Despite the successful experiment with advertising in public channels, Pavel Durov believes that Telegram should be primarily funded by users, not advertisers.

New Features of Web-Bots

Telegram grows in China despite lockdown

Telegram's popularity in China began to grow in February 2020, when Chinese authorities tightened censorship of Covid-19 conversations on popular domestic platforms such as WeChat and Weibo. In search of alternative sources of information, some people turned to Telegram and others to Signal. Telegram installations in China grew 64% that month to 110,000 according to the Sensor Tower at the South China Morning Post, while Signal installations grew 70% to 17,000.

Telegram downloads also spiked last summer as former US President Donald Trump tried to ban WeChat in the US, prompting users to look for other ways to stay with friends and family in China. WeChat is normally the go-to tool for communicating with people in China, it is apparently used by everyone, and as a Chinese app, it works reliably within the country, but it must comply with local laws such as those that allow authorities to access the data of users who make some turn up their noses.
