An anamorphosis is an object that can only be fully seen and understood by looking at it from a particular angle, or from a particular place.

People have been using this technique since ancient times.

For instance, in a famous sculptors' competition, the famous Phidias presented a statue of Athena which looked like a mockery of the goddess - the distorted proportions made it simply ugly. The Ancient Greeks almost stoned the master for blasphemy. His rival in the contest, Alcmene, who had created a perfectly correct sculpture, was confident of victory.

But after both statues were placed in their proper places on a high pedestal, Phidias' victory became evident. Thanks to optical effects, his Athena from the right vantage point became perfect.
