At the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, another world record was broken in a swimming pool. Moreover, to the delight of the Hungarian public, following the Italian Thomas Ceccon (100 m backstroke), the favorite of the local public, a native of Budapest, Krystof Milak, distinguished himself. The 22-year-old swimmer removed almost four tenths of a second from his own world achievement in the final of the 2022 World Cup at the crown distance of the 200 m butterfly, showing a phenomenal result - 1.50,34.
Milak was considered the clear favorite of the final swim. Which is not surprising, Kryshtof has not lost to anyone in the 200 m butterfly at the main starts for a long time. He won the 2018 and 2021 European Championships, the 2019 World Championships (where, by the way, he set the previous record (1.50,73) and, of course, the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. There he was ahead of everyone by almost two and a half seconds, even if he limited himself to the Olympic record (1.51,25).
It is clear that in Budapest Milak again competed only with himself. He was set up for a world record. And did not disappoint. By the middle of the race, he was ahead of the WR schedule by 99 hundredths, before the last "fifty kopecks" his advantage was already off the scale in a second. In the last meters, Kryshtof slowed down a little, but he still completed the maximum task - he beat his own achievement. After that he emotionally commented on his success:
You know, this is my home. This is my pool, my fourth lane! Four thousand magnificent people watched my swim today. I just couldn't let them down!
