- The name Perm is of unknown etymology. It may have come from the word parma, which in the local language meant a “furry” place because there were many fur-bearing animals. Or that was the name of the local mythological hero called in the local, Finno- Ugrish, language Pera. Or it may have its origin in the word Pere Maa, which in a local language meant a “faraway land.”

- The city of Perm gave the name to the Permian geological period. The term was suggested in 1841 by the geologist Roderick Murchison.

- Perm used to be the administrative center of the Ural region. However, after the Bolshevik revolution of 1917, Yekaterinburg was chosen for that role as a more industrial and more loyal city to the new Soviet regime city.
