I’d never thought that I could just . . . hew to my own mean. I thought about Allison. She also talked a lot; sometimes she gossiped. I’d heard her say uncharitable things; she’d said them about me! For as much as I idolized her, I was also deeply aware of her flaws.

(The list was much the same as mine.)

Was it possible that someone could love me the way I loved her? The way she loved me?
“Okay, okay,” I said, barely conceding. “I’ll believe you when it happens.”
