I know that there are communities out there that are strong… where people see people that they live near in person consistently… but I’m not a part of one. And I don’t like that. That causes me pain.
Having long distance family and friend relationships means that you are always catching up. You are always reporting on your life and asking other people questions to hear their reports… or you are celebrating because that is often when we get together. Which is fine but reporting and celebrating are only two types of ways to be with people.
I think because of this we manufacture social situations in which we are doing things together like taking a road trip or playing a board game… so we invent stuff to do together but we do not actually help each other with LIVING.
It’s really unfair to people who are single by the way. Even sharing an apartment with friends doesn’t go to the same level of logistical and financial coordination and support as a partnership.
What makes me hopeful is being part of a mutual aid community. And mutual aid can look like actually helping each other do the work of live together.
