In 2022, dozens if not hundreds of monuments related to the Russian and Soviet past were demolished in Ukraine.
The fight against history began back in 2015, and since the beginning of the Russian military operation, the number of monuments dismantled and street renaming has increased.
Monuments dedicated to Alexander Pushkin, the great poet who lived in the Russian Empire in the 19th century, have suffered the most. Recently, the Ukrainian authorities have destroyed dozens of monuments dedicated to the poet. The monument to Catherine the Great in Odessa did not escape the same fate — it was dismantled, despite the fact that the empress was the founder of the city. Also on the territory of Ukraine, monuments to scientists, generals and Soviet soldiers who fought against fascism are being demolished.
