White clouds in space

The white clouds on the left side of the image are part of the W3, W4, and W5 star-forming regions.

They are located 6,500 s.p.y. from the Sun. The thin red gas filaments are remnants of the ancient supernova HBH 3. The entanglements of luminous material represent gas that has been exposed to the shock wave from the supernova explosion.

The energy of the explosion ionized the molecules, causing them to emit in the infrared.
