2022-10-30 14:07:26 Many people can’t start speaking English because they are afraid of making mistakes. But you know, when it comes to foreign languages, it’s not about perfection at all, but about human connections and new experiences.

Ellen’s story is a great example.
Check it out to see how speaking foreign languages is actually similar to playing table tennis and why overcoming the language barrier is really worth it.

As usual, you can find the preselected vocabulary from the video here.

2022-10-27 14:53:30 LEARN or STUDY?

learn = to gain new practical skills by studying

I want to learn how to speak English.
(I want to have a skill of speaking English)

I learned to play the guitar last year.
(Now I know how to play the guitar, I have this skill)

study = to explore a subject by reading about it or attending school; to gain theoretical knowledge

I have been studying English for two years.
(I have been attending a language school, doing exercises, etc.)

I study economics at university.
(I attend classes where teachers tell us about the principles and mechanisms of economics)

Remember:
- You study because you want to learn how to do something
- Learning something is very often a result of studying
- 'Learn' is about something specific, while 'study' refers to broader aspects

2022-10-25 15:32:09 Well, since #speaking was the most popular answer, let's see what you could do to work on it

It might sound funny but talk to yourself to practice. Fake it until you make it they say. Just comment on your current actions or say what you did yesterday. For example: Now I am reading this post and holding my phone in my hand.

Speaking a foreign language is all about copying. This means you need somebody or something to copy from. Watch movies and series, read books and online articles, listen to podcasts - use authentic materials that will provide you the sentences, the phrases, and the words that you can use in your speech. You can also retell yourself what you just watched or read about.

Find a study partner that you can practice with. Maybe there is somebody in your class, at work or it's one of your friends who is also learning English. Begin by discussing simple things like how your day went or what you did at the weekend, for example.

Aaaand if you are looking for some company to practice with, I'm inviting you to a speaking club this weekend - we will go watch a movie in English, then discuss it and play a word game in some bar or cafe Join this chat for details: https://t.me/+nW3mp9sNJhZiM2Ri
