The loudest sound in the history of mankind
Krakatau (Krakatau, Ind.) is an active volcano in Indonesia.In 1883 there was a catastrophic eruption that destroyed most of the island.Much of the cone of the volcano, which previously reached a height of 2000 m, was destroyed. Rocks and volcanic ash reached a thin atmosphere at altitudes up to 55 kilometers and were scattered over an area of about 800,000 square kilometers within a radius of up to 500 kilometers. The eruption and the resulting tsunami of up to 20 meters high on neighboring islands killed 36,000 people.
Sounds of explosions were heard 4,800 km away from the volcano. Later on, according to readings of barometers in different places of the world, it was established that infrasonic waves caused by explosions circled the globe several times. The force of the volcano explosion was estimated at 100-200 megatons of TNT, which is more than 10 thousand times greater than the force of the explosion that destroyed Hiroshima.
