Cats pop up in annunciations by Rubens, Barocci and Lotto, representing femininity, domesticity and sometimes the devil – or what the Jungian psychologist Marie-Louise von Franz calls the “feminine shadow”, the dark side to the Virgin Mary, the mother of God.

morose (=unhappy, annoyed, and unwilling to speak or smile) expression.
to nuzzle = to touch, rub, or press something or someone gently and/or in a way that shows your love, especially with the head or nose, usually with small repeated movements. E.g.,

She succeeds in capturing the
daft (=silly or stupid, UK informal)
haughtiness (=unfriendly behaviour that shows you consider yourself better than other people) that is essentially the essence of cat.

standoffish (=behaving in a slightly unfriendly and too formal way)
nature.
It’s as though they are both daring you to say something: call Laserstein a crazy cat lady
at your peril (=might be very dangerous for you).
