The trust between the grey whales and boat captains at this calving lagoon is something that is developed over numerous encounters throughout the years. This whale had no objections to Captain Paco picking whale lice off of its head.

Did you know that there’s an ancient technique for preserving fresh fruits without any chemicals? It’s called Kangina, and it originated in the north of Afghanistan. With Kangina, fruits like grapes, apricots, and figs can be stored for up to a year without losing their taste, texture, or nutritional value.

How does it work? First, the fruits are carefully handpicked and washed. Then, they’re layered in special containers made of clay or ceramic, called Kangina pots. The pots are sealed with a mixture of mud and straw, which creates a natural airtight seal. Finally, the pots are buried underground in a cool and dry place, where the temperature and humidity are constant.

Over time, the fruits undergo a natural fermentation process, which transforms their sugars into organic acids, such as acetic acid and lactic acid. This process also creates natural preservatives, such as alcohol and carbon dioxide, which prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi.

Have you ever wondered why the sky is blue?

It's not just a coincidence or a random choice by nature. The blue color of the sky is actually due to the way sunlight interacts with our atmosphere. As sunlight enters the Earth's atmosphere, it collides with molecules in the air, scattering the light in different directions. Blue light, with its shorter wavelength, is more easily scattered than other colors, giving the sky its characteristic blue hue. So next time you look up at the sky, remember it's not just a pretty color, but a fascinating scientific phenomenon.

Have you ever heard of the Jabuticaba tree? Native to Brazil, this unique tree produces fruit right on its trunk and branches! That’s right, you can pluck juicy Jabuticaba berries straight off the bark. The tree is also known for its beautiful foliage and can grow up to 40 feet tall. Fun fact: Jabuticaba is often used to make wine and jelly!

Yellow garden spiders are large, orb-weaving arachnids, meaning they spin a circular web. Most spiders have two claws on each foot, but orb weavers have an additional claw to help them spin their complex webs. In females, the top side of the abdomen is black with symmetrical patches of bright yellow.

The legs are reddish brown at the base and black toward the tips. Males are less striking in appearance—they are smaller with brownish legs and less yellow coloration on their abdomens. Females average 0.75 to 1.1 inches (19 to 28 millimeters) in body length, which is up to three times larger than males.

These spiders produce venom that is harmless to humans but helps to immobilize prey like flies, bees, and other flying insects that are caught in the web. The web of the garden spider contains a highly visible zigzagging X-shaped pattern called a stabilimentum.

The exact function of the stabilimentum is unknown, but its purpose may be to alert birds to the presence of the web so that they don’t fly through and destroy it by mistake. The spider may eat and respin its web each night.

A vapor cone

Vapor cones are created by a shockwave that is generated by the aircraft as it picks up speed. The shock waves are the physical effects of the aircraft travelling so fast through air. As the aircraft picks up speed, and approaches the speed of sound, shockwaves form around the aircraft.

Across these shockwaves there is ‘discontinuity’ in the local air pressure and temperature. This causes the air to lose its capacity to hold water and condensation starts to form, creating the vapor cone.

Elephant seals take their name from the large proboscis of the adult male (bull), reminiscent of an elephant's trunk, and it's considered a secondary sexual characteristic. The bull's proboscis is used to producing extraordinarily loud roaring noises, especially during the mating season.

They can be over 20 feet long and weigh up to 8,800 pounds. But these massive pinnipeds aren't called elephant seals because of their size. They take their name from their trunk-like inflatable snouts.
