Why AI is killing Art, but it’s only the beginningMy friends, I’m only writing you, but I hope you read this to the end.
Until now, I’ve been content to leave social networks at the same time as this “concept artist” career, and during the events of the last three years, I have chosen to act locally.
You have certainly not been able to escape the recent emotions of the artistic community on Artsation and elsewhere concerning "art" generated by artificial intelligence (I am thinking particularly of Dall-E and Midjourney). And perhaps you have also been able to test since the beginning of December ChatGPT, the conversational AI by Openai, and you have found that the same phenomenal capacities applies both to text and image.
However, in the case of ChatGPT, the clamping is quite obvious: no internet access, static data set cut in 2021, and an official semantic clamping "safety net" which bypass any controversial subject.
So, now imagine ChatGPT without these clamps.
Imagine an AI which, in addition, would have access to the files of the GAFAMs, including the illegal and massive collection coming from the peripherals of mobile phones (do not tell me that you do not believe it, please may Edward Snowden has at least served to something), or public files like those of social security and taxes, security cameras, and ... banks (look for the recent requests made in many countries by governments to their parliaments seeking to vote unlimited access to banking data).
Imagine what an AI trained on this data could produce as results. Imagine the power of prediction and anticipation. Imagine the power of manipulation that an AI would offer which, instead of producing an image, a philosophical dissertation, or a code template for an application, would generate public policies and advertising messages intended to obtain a very specific result.
If it seems unlikely, just think about it for a while. Go dialogue with ChatGPT, or go give an instruction to Midjourney, look at the result, and remember that these AI are immensely restrained: by laws, by technical constraints linked to their large-scale use, by public opinion and by customs.
And ask yourself if it is not absurd to imagine that people with the capacity and the power to do so would abstain?
If all of this seems likely, then you are late: because this is the explanation for the apparent absurdity of public policies in the past three years. No, our leaders are not incompetent, it is simply silly and pretentious to think so: they are extremely competent to perform the tasks assigned to them by their masters.
Look closely at these tools, and you'll see that the danger is not about your "concept art" profession disappearing. Remember what I wrote, which I still stand by when I left the art industry ?
We, concept artists, only are "artists" by the name thrown at our ego, as a reward for our blind servility, just like we throw a peanut at a caged chimpanzee when he creates a new variant of the same grimace.
The stake is much larger, it is called awakening.
So, wake up, because
All these are the beginning of sorrows.
