Acicular ice is ice formations in the form of separate or grouped vertically elongated columnar crystals. It can form in calm water near river banks, or under a thin layer of turf, soil, or rocks.
Acicular ice forms when water or soil temperatures are above 0 degrees Celsius and surface temperatures are below 0 degrees. In order for such ice to begin to form, the process of ice segregation is necessary, which is possible only in a porous medium.
