Some children spend a long time each day on their smartphones. Why is this? Is it positive or negative development?
Smartphones became the thing with which juveniles spend a lot of time each day. While mobile phones provide children with a lot of different information, games, and sites, it seems impossible to get them interested in something else. Although mobile phones can be useful in numerous situations, I still consider this trend to be a dangerous one.
Minors love to spend their free time playing games with their smartphones or watching endless clips. That means spending their entire day, looking at the screen and consuming dozens of sporadic information. The feature that entices them the most is a modern algorithm, which brings the most wanting content to your attention, based on what you are entertained with. For example, Youtube advises you as many videos on them, you’ve been interrogating, as you would not be able to watch for your entire life. Therefore it encourages doom-scrolling and spending more time at the screen.
It is the absence of self-control that is damaging the most. Children become less successful in their schools, getting a lower grade, because it is much easier for them to watch some Youtuber, who may as well advertise dangerous products and make unsafe ideas look appealing. Also children’s involvement in Internet-life prevents them from making new connections in the real world, cutting their opportunities to get their knowledge from the experience and family. Additionally, the connection between juveniles and their parents becomes thicker, misunderstandings grow on the bases of different values and views, which children adopt from the unknown person from the digital world.
In conclusion, nowadays it is extremely enticing for children to be at the smartphone screens, because it provides with endless content. Nevertheless, the information given there might be dangerous. Not only because it is time-consuming, it also has opaque sources and disturbing ideas. Also it prevents from organically embracing family values, therefore I find the trend of increasing children screen-time extremely negative.
